Automatic litter boxes,
compared honestly
What each one costs to buy in Australia, what it really costs to run once you count bags, cartridges and litter, which cats it actually fits, and whether anyone here will repair it.
The three questions that decide this
Most guides open with a ranked list. The three things that actually determine whether you keep the box or return it are rarely on the product page: what it costs to feed every year, whether your cat physically fits it, and who repairs it when the motor fails in year two.
The cost people miss: the sticker price is the smaller half. Proprietary waste bags, cartridges and the extra litter an automatic cycle consumes add up every month, and the brands that lock you into their own consumables are not always the ones that say so loudest. Our register puts the five-year cost of ownership side by side.

Are automatic litter boxes worth it?
They remove the daily scoop, which is the whole proposition. The honest counterweight is that the purchase price is only part of the cost: proprietary waste bags or cartridges, more litter per cycle than a manual tray, and eventual parts are the ongoing part, and almost nobody publishes those figures. That is what our running-cost register is for.
Will an automatic box fit a large cat?
Not always, and this is the single biggest cause of a returned unit. Manufacturers state a maximum cat weight and an entry height, and larger cats can trip or refuse a small chamber. We keep those limits in one register so you can check before buying rather than after.
Can I use my usual cat litter?
Sometimes, and using the wrong one can jam the mechanism or void the warranty outright. Clumping clay is the safest default across most models, while crystal, tofu, wood pellet and recycled paper are supported by some and explicitly excluded by others.
Do these boxes need an app and wifi?
Some do, and a few will not complete a cycle without a working connection and an account. If the box lives in a bedroom or a rental with poor wifi, that matters more than most spec-sheet features. We record which models need an app and which run standalone.
